A Look At Mexican Food History
When people think of Mexican food, warm tacos and burritos fill their minds. However, what they do not realize is that these mouth-watering treats have seen a series of changes over the course of the centuries. In fact, you might be surprised at some of what you learn.
A person with a historical background will understand that the Mayans once ruled the Yucatan area of Mexico. This tribe of Indians fed off the wild life and created unique meals and cuisine in Mexico. While they were doing this, they also incorporated spices and other items that grew in the land. Thus incorporating the foundations for the foods we enjoy today.
What followed this is known as the Pre-Columbian era. In this time, Europeans had not added complexity to the diets of the Mexican people. Instead, they focus more on chili, corn, and beans in their dishes than anything else does, with corn being the main staple. This in turn also led to the creation of tortillas and other items made from this delicious substance. As you can see Mexican, food history has some interesting details to it.
When 1521 rolled around, the Spanish began to incorporate their diets into the Mexican food tradition. They took what the locals knew and then added in items like beef, pork, chicken, rice and other items and then created several unique and flavorful items that are considered traditional to this day.
However, in 1865, a new group of people would stop by and bring their passion for baking. This led to treats like Mexican sweet breads and similar items being created that have an obvious touch of the French culture to them.
Over the years, other cultures like Africa, Portugal and even those of the Caribbean have found their way into the local dishes and have created a long series of additions and variations to the entire Mexican cuisine. Of course, depending on where you head down to in Mexico, you might find their idea of what is authentic different from another’s. However, the Mexican food history continues to play a strong role in whatever they make.
In the United States, we do have a slight variation on the Mexican foods we eat and this is called Tex-Mex. This is a combination of the concepts of Mexico given a Texan twist and often creates many of the dishes that we create today. As times change and we move forward, it will be interesting to see what changes come to the Mexican food history as we learn about new foods and items that can add to its flavor and enhance the experience we have when we enjoy this tasty cooking.
